Barangay

"' Your tropical hide- away"

When would you like to check in at Barangay?

Photo Gallery

After running our B&B more than 18 years, on June 8 we moved to our new Mansion at HERENSTRAAT 26. Just couple of minutes away from the old location and around 10 minutes away to Amsterdam Centraal Station. Barangay is a Filipino word meaning small village or community. Ask any Filipino to satisfy your own curiosity. Our tropical decorated guest house is located in a typical Amsterdam canal (town) house erected in the 18th century. Like our old house in Droogbak, built around 1777. We greeted our first guests on the 8th of August, 1999. We give each guest a warm welcome. A unique home away from home with a twist, your very own original tropical room. Through the years, Barangay B&B has been showered with multiple Awards & Recognitions. We are humbled by hundreds of excellent guest reviews. To our guests, we cannot thank you enough. NOTE: As reviews are location related, please look at the reviews of baRRio B&B, this new guesthouse run by Godwin's sister.

The Location

The B&B is located in the canal area of the city centre within the Unesco World Heritage Site. Definitely one of the best areas to explore Amsterdam and beyond. Literally, most tourist attractions are just around the corner, within walking distance!

Our street with funky shops and trendy restaurants connects two major canals. (Keizersgracht and Herengracht). A short walk you will find the the longest shopping street of Amsterdam. A section of which called Haarlemmerstraat/dijk, has been consistently voted as the best shopping street of Holland. This former sea dike now features good restaurants, cafes, specialty / local shops and even a small art-deco cinema.

From Schiphol Airport it’s a 15/20 minute train ride to Amsterdam Centraal Station

THE TROPICAL ROOMS

Our non smoking double or twin rooms are decorated in a quirky, tropical, S/E Asian style. Both rooms have large en-suite bathrooms with showers and bathtubs. Unique among B&B’s, we have Japanese bidet toilets for complete hygiene. Rooms are on the first and second floor. Like monumental houses in Amsterdam, we have steep narrow stairs, the B&B is not suitable to those physicaly challenged.

THE HOSTS

The owners, Wimmo and Godwin ( or God as he is called by his friends) are two easy-going guys, being friends since 1996. In August 1999 their biggest dream came true and opened their own guest house, Barangay Bed and Breakfast.

Wimmo, the Dutch look-a-like of Bruce Willis was born in a small city near Rotterdam. He was trained as a classical ballet dancer in The Hague and from 1980 till 1987, he danced for Het Internationale Dans Theather in Amsterdam. After 3 years in the advertising world, he worked for a canal boat company and managed it for 10 years. Aside from the Barangay, Wimmo worked part-time as host/guide on canal boats trips for the same company. He is the in-house designer and interior decorater.  In 2005 Wimmo opened his 2 rooms in the apartment upstairs. In 2010 he has rediscovered his passion for painting.

Before cold Netherlands 1996, Godwin lived a long and happy live in tropical paradise, The  Philippines. There  he was a college instructor in economics and political science, a research writer both for MBC business magazine and Lady Senator Rasul. Happier times in Amsterdam, Godwin did all kind of ‘odd jobs’ instead of finishing his MBA studies. He also  worked for a canal boat company, waited for Hard Rock Café, helped Mader run “Sunhead of 1617 Guest House” and seriously, was a data typist. A licensed tennis instructor since 2005, Godwin is a fanatic tennis player and a regular fixture in de GLTA European circuit.

Eduardo was born in Brazil where he worked for a bank until 1992. That same year he moved to Bolzano in North Italy.

After working in a popular club , he opened his own bar “Casa Nova” in 1995.

Two years later he came to Amsterdam and worked together with Godwin in Hard Rock cafe Amsterdam.

Besides running the B&B he also works part time time in a Italian restaurant. Eduardo speaks 5 languages and loves to cook.

THE HOSTS

Our Ginger Cats Flip & Gogo had a good life with us for almost 16 years, unfortunately cats don’t live forever…

The 14th of December 2012 we welcomed our new Black Boys Billy & Bossy.

Billy is a bit bigger than his brother, he is very curios and playfull. Bossy takes it easy and is still a bit shy.

We hope they will complete our family for at least another 16 years!

The 8th of June 2020, a great date to celebrate the arrival of the newest member host, Bodi. A peoples dog, socialising is his hobby, definitely the easiest “dognap” candidate. This pedigree of a chihuahua has family line of  great champions and his walk reveals it all.
